What I wanna know is how they counter-rigged the race? I put some major effort into that cheat. Unfortunately, I’ll probably never find out how they did it. This is destined to be one of those mind embers that’ll never burn out.

Biting my lip, I admit I may be focusing on my failed cheat to avoid my real fear. Dodging through the crowd, I throw a furtive glance at Norma.

Unfortunately, in addition to losing my bet, I also convinced Shavel to bet fifty large against the twenty we already owed him. Shavel’s not a nice guy. At all. But, he’s kinda like me in that he’s a sucker for a sure thing. So, he bet on my fixed race... with Gellers Clemet. While Shavel’s the most notorious criminal in the city, Gellers is the most notorious on the planet. Worse. Instead of betting fifty large, Shavel bet five-hundred large. Enough to pay off his debt to Gellers.

Then my rat came in second.

Never seen someone turn that red without stroking out. Yeah, Norma and I really need to get off-world before Shavel finds a creative way to squeeze all those credits out of our hides.

Fortunately, I have a plan.

Hope this works out better than the rat race. Otherwise....
